Think Twice Before Giving Backhanded Compliments | RoC Skincare #ForYourAge

Backhanded compliments  like you look good ……. “for your age”, are not always intentional. Most of the time,  the person who is complimenting you means well. But these kind of compliments can make you question yourself. What do you mean I look good for my age? Am I supposed to look bad at 40? Or really bad at 50? RoC® Skincare wants us to think twice before giving a backhanded compliment. That’s why they teamed up with Thandie Newton to bring you the #ForYourAge campaign.

Think Twice Before Giving Backhanded Compliments | RoC® Skincare #ForYourAged

According to a study conducted last year, 80% of women have heard “you look great for your age” as a compliment.  I started getting backhanded compliments in my late 30s. To tell you the truth, I thought it was totally okay in the beginning. But when I turned 40 last year, more and more people would compliment me on my looks, then added modifiers like ‘for your age’ at the end of the compliments. Sometimes I didn’t know what to do with such compliments. Do I say  thank you? Or do I smile and walk away?

A compliment can quickly become a slap across the face. Telling a woman she looks good “for her age” defeats the purpose of complimenting her. Why do I have to look good  for my age? Would you tell a 20-year-old that she looks good for her age? No! You would tell her that she looks good. Period. Why can’t women in their late 30s, early 40s, and 50s receive the same kind of compliments?

#ForYourAge

Words have power!  Adding for your age to a compliment can really bring one’s spirit down, when we should be lifting each other up. We need to think twice before giving backhanded compliments. It is not okay to tell older women they look great “for their age”. Let’s all think twice before using #ForYourAge with a compliment again
This buzzer will help me challenge the next person who gives me a backhanded compliment

I totally agree that back handed compliments are harsh and I cringe a bit when I hear them. I do understand too that the givers of back handed compliments usually do not mean harm to the recipient. I love this Campaign and the buzzer.

This such such a great campaign. I listen to a podcast where one of the hosts (who is in her 20s) says this to almost every woman over 30. I just don’t think people understand that are giving a backhanded compliment, which is why this campaign is so great. 🙂

People should learn to just give compliments without making you feel bad about yourself. I love this campaign.

I definitely don’t like backhanded compliments although I don’t always look at it the same way. But am trying to be more careful when I say it to others.
