Fitness Friday:: Is Romaine Lettuce Better Than Iceberg Lettuce?

Hi Everyone! You know that fresh fruits and vegetables are the first foods that come to mind when you are on a low fat diet. And I am sure that you know that not all vegetables are created equal. I’ve always had questions about which lettuce is better, Iceberg or Romaine. I also heard on some TV Show that the darker the vegetable, the better. The more nutritious it is. I don’t care how dark it is. Nobody can take my iceberg lettuce away from me! Just give it to me with some Ranch dressing, a little bit of croutons, and I am ready to go. But after doing a little bit of research, I found out that you get more for your money when you spend on romaine lettuce Vs. iceberg lettuce.

Nutritional Values of Iceberg Lettuce Vs. Romaine Lettuce

1 cup of iceberg lettuce:
  • 8.0 calories
  • 0.5 gram of protein
  • 0.7 gram of fiber
  • 10 milligrams of calcium
  • 78 milligrams of potassium
  • 1.5 milligrams of vitamin C
  • 16 micrograms of folate
  • 13.3 micrograms of vitamin K
  • 164 micrograms of  beta carotene
  • 152 micrograms of lutein + zeaxanthin

1 cup of romaine lettuce:
  • 8.0 calories
  • 0.58 gram of protein
  • 1.0 gram of fiber
  • 16 milligrams of calcium
  • 116 milligrams of potassium
  • 11.3 milligrams of vitamin C
  • 64 micrograms of folate
  • 48.2  micrograms of vitamin K
  • 1,637 micrograms of beta carotene
  • 1,087 micrograms of lutein + zeaxanthin
I don’t even know what zeaxanthin is, but I know the glow that I get whenever I eat foods that are rich in beta carotene. If it means that I have to pay a little bit extra to get that glow, I guess it is a sacrifice that I have to make. But I will not give up on my iceberg lettuce completely. I am sure I can have both of them in my salads like I did here. And there you have it! While one cup of iceberg lettuce contains the same amount of calories as a cup of romaine lettuce, it is in your best interest to buy romaine lettuce. Even if you have to pay a little bit extra.

But I love iceberg lettuce 🙁 maybe I'll start getting those mixed bags of greens instead so I can still indulge in the crispness of iceberg. Thanks for answering one of my longtime curiosities.
