BEING NATURAL: If I Knew Then What I Know Now

I did my big chop almost 15 months ago. It sounds like a long time when I say it like that. I started my natural hair journey on my 35th birthday. A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life, said Coco Chanel. My life changed alright!

It’s been a wonderful journey so far, but if I knew then what I know now, there are a lot of things that I would have done differently. Number one being chopping my hair off after transitioning for only eight (8) months. The short hair did not go with my face. Like Bill Cosby said, “I did not have the face for it.” During my TWA days, I would have given anything just to be able to put my hair in a bun. Instead, I hid my natural hair by wearing all kind of hair extensions, which was not part of the plan.
Number two, My darling Scurl “No Drip” Activator Moisturizer was not behaving the same way after I cut my hair. I was disappointed because it made my hair so soft when I was transitioning. I guess what they say about your hair texture changing after a cut is true.
Number three, My hair texture made a complete 360 on me. It went from having some curl patterns to not having any curls at all. Was it my imagination? Did I miss something? Is there a scientific explanation behind that change? I don’t know. All I remember is that my roots were soft and curly when I had two-textured hair.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have transitioned for a longer period of time. No doubt about it! I would have slowly cut the ends off until there was no relaxed hair left.  If I knew then what I know now, I would have done more research on different natural hair types and how to care for them before going natural. My first natural hair milestone was my first bun. Now my hair is neck length after blow drying it, which makes putting it in a bun even easier. So if you are transitioning, or want to go natural one day, my advice is to do your own research. Don’t make any decision based on what somebody else did or said. And the best advice ever is to be patient.

I wish I had transitioned. I knew NOTHING about the natural hair movement or how to care for my hair when I chopped all my hair off. I just knew I wanted to stop using relaxers.Perhaps my hair would have been longer now since I do not have to worry about breakage with two textures.

Transitioning is the best way to go, Onyeka.
