5 Social Media Mistakes To Avoid In 2023

Social Media is a fun place to be. For me personally, it allows me to connect with friends and family. It also allows me to be my most-creative-self. Without social media, I don’t think I would be able to reach and connect with so many women. BUT, as you already know, social media can be time consuming, overwhelming, and down right distracting. Okay. I will explain what I mean by distracting later. Don’t bite my head off yet.

When you are an “influencer”, you are not just the name behind the brand. You are the brand. You are not only selling the product. You are the product. And because who you are and what you do are so connected, it’s easy to make mistakes. Today I want to share with you some of my personal social media mistakes and how I fixed them. Hopefully you will learn from them.

5 Social Media Mistakes To Avoid In 2023

1. Forgetting Why You Started

My main reason for creating an Instagram account back in 2013, was to promote my blog posts. I probably did that for a solid year. I remember sharing my #washdayeperience every single Friday. Then things started changing. People were not talking about natural hair as much. Although I was still blogging, I did not promote my blog posts as much. And for me, Instagram became my blogging platform. I got so focused on Instagram, I even stopped posting my blog posts on Facebook and in Facebook groups.

It’s very important to remember why you started your journey. With so many people doing so many different things on on social media, it’s very easy to lose yourself. It’s easy to get distracted by what everybody else is doing. For me, the biggest social media mistake that I made was not using social media enough to promote my blog.

2. Not Planning Your Day

Being very active on social media requires discipline. Not planning your day is another mistake that can cost you. And I am still talking based on experience. My husband is very good at letting me know when I am all over the place. He is actually the one who helped me work on my schedule. I had a routine that worked perfectly until my dad got really sick. My sister and I had to rearrange our schedules so we could take turns taking care of him. And because of that, my presence on social media was not the same.

You need to decide how you are going to start your day. Do a little planning the night before. Plan how many stories you will post that day. And it’s okay if you cannot post 3-5 stories a day. There are days when you will not be able to post at all. And that’s okay, too. The goal is to plan your day so you can use your 24-hour wisely.

3. Not Doing A Mental Health Check

One of the biggest social media mistakes you can make is not doing a mental health check. When who you are and what you do are so connected, losing sight of what’s important is very easy. I had a sinus infection around fall break of last year that made me realize that I was working too much. My doctor made it very clear to me that he wanted me to rest. When I got home from the Urgent Care, I remember laying in bed thinking about the last time I had some real time off. The last time I stayed in bed on purpose. The last time I meditated, or crocheted a scarf. That same week, I went to our trip to Tennessee and posted nothing on social media. It was just me, my family, and the ducks. God, they have ducks!

My point is, it’s okay to take a day off. It’s okay to check on your mental state and well-being. It’s okay to unplug, disconnect, and sign out. The worst thing you can do is worrying about what your followers will think. Keep in mind that you cannot pour from an empty glass. Anybody who cannot understand that should not be in your circle in the first place.

4. Ignoring The Source Of The Problem

Being a content creator means you have to create, of course. But there are days when you will not feel your most creative self. There are days when you will ask yourself why you are doing this. Is being a content creator what you were born to do? I have asked myself these questions so many times. But the real question is why are you asking yourself these questions? What is the source of the problem? For me, Working a 12-hour shift, 3 days a week was the source of my problem. Not only that, I was miserable at my job. Don’t get me wrong, I got paid good money and I loved my co-workers. But the job itself was so stressful.

Once I figured out what the source of my problem was, I decided to work on a plan. I sat down with my husband and told him that I was going to save enough money so I could work my regular job part time in order to have more time to be a content creator. But God had a different plan. HE opened up a new position for me at the same company so I would not have to work such long hours. I went from working a 12-hour shift to working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. And in case you were wondering, I did save up enough money to go with plan A.

Whenever you feel like giving up, burned out, and frustrated. Always remember to get to the bottom of what’s happening. Don’t ignore the source of the problem. Because until you fix it, you will not be able to move forward.

5. Forgetting To Have Fun

Not having fun is on top of the list for me when it comes to social media mistakes. Not doing so is a clear sign that you don’t enjoy what you do. And by fun I don’t mean watching crazy videos on TikTok. To me personally, that’s a distraction. Having fun means showing your true self. Being personable and relatable. It could be something as simple as singing while doing your makeup tutorial, or dancing while doing your nighttime skincare routine. Anything that shows your supporters that you actually enjoy what you do. Forget about LIKES and VIEWS, and all the other crazy algorithm nonsense. Just show up as yourself everyday, remember why you started, stay focused, and have fun!

If you follow these tips everyday, you will avoid making those social media mistakes that I made. And being a content creator will be so much easier.

I can completely relate to your post. Remembering why I started helps me bring things into perspective when I’m overwhelmed and taking on too many collaborations. I had to scale down this year and only took on things that I really loved or were paid opportunities. This past year was better than the last in terms of keeping my life more balanced. Really appreciate you talking about this topic. Hope you’re doing well!
