4 Easy Ways to Detangle Dry, Frizzy Hair

There are probably more than 4 Easy Ways to Detangle Dry, Frizzy Hair.  I don’t detangle my hair very often. But when I do, I try to be as careful as possible. Detangling the hair properly is the best way to avoid breakage and retain length. The reason why I don’t detangle often is because I wear my protective styles for at least two weeks. There are different ways you can detangle your hair, depending on your hair type. I personally think that people with thin hair should detangle the hair while it is dry. This hair type tends to get matted very quickly.

If the hair gets matted before getting it wet, the best way to remedy the problem is to use a moisturizing conditioner before getting the hair wet.  If your hair shrinks a lot in the shower, you should also detangle the hair before getting it wet to avoid unnecessary knots. There isn’t a right way to detangle your hair. What works for me may not work for you. Using a comb or detangling the hair with your fingers is a personal choice. I have never used a detangling brush, but I know women who swear by it. I use a wide tooth comb, or my fingers when I feel a knot.

4 Easy Ways to Detangle Dry, Frizzy Hair

  1. Detangle with water during daily moisturizing. If you feel a knot while moisturizing your hair, remove it right away. Some knots are stubborn and won’t budge without the help of a pair of scissors.
  2. Using a detangling solution can also make the detangling process easier because these solutions contain conditioning agents that softens the hair and loosens the knots.
  3. I use a moisturizing conditioner every time I wash my hair, unless I am reviewing a shampoo or conditioner.  I love to detangle my hair while it is soaked because
the slip helps me remove the knots and shedded hair faster.
  4. If you already use any oil to pre-poo your hair, find knots and tangles while doing so, and remove them. Extra virgin olive oil works well on my daughter’s hair. Olive oil is one of the best oils for when you are detangling on dry hair. It doesn’t only soften the hair. It adds shine, minimizes friction, and leaves the hair frizz-free after shampooing.

Great tips Nerline. I love native olive oil, sometimes I do a hair mask over night with it, cause my hair is pretty dry too. My hair feels amazing and very shiny the next morning.

I too detangle when my hair is dry. I add oil to my palms to reduce the frictions. Awesome tips!

Great tips! I had to trim off a knot yesterday and its not even wash day! I have my hair in loose two strand twists and in typical form, I was messing with the ends of one. It had a loose shed hair that wrapped around the end and unfortunately, this was a tight one so snip snip it went.

For fine hair, dry detangling is actually not the best. It's almost the equivalent of combing dry hair. I used to comb my relaxed hair with a large tooth comb and couldnt' understand why I always had some breakage. Damp detangling is better because it allows the hair to stretch a little. So, I went from dry to wet to damp detangling and damp is the winner! Well, with some added oil and conditioner 🙂

I had a different experience, Michelle! My hair gets very thin after wearing extensions for a long time. If I try to detangle the hair while it is wet, I experience breakage because the hair gets knotted more. But if I use extra virgin olive oil to detangle it before I get it wet, I experience less breakage. I guess it depends on the person and how thin the hair actually is. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, really leaned from this post. I didn't know I was supposed to detangle hair that shrinks a lot before washing it. My daughters hair is quite long but would curl up very tightly and get really short upon washing it. Conditioning usually helps but it's probably be better to detangle first. I will try that. Thanks for this info babe, should save my life and make wash days a little more pleasant and tear free.

Great post! I usually just run a brush through my hair to detangle it. My hair gets frizzy in the winter time. Maybe I should try using oil. Have a great afternoon!
