10 Bad Things You Can Do to Good Hair

Good hair is whatever hair you feel comfortable with. I can’t possible describe what good hair is to you because what is “GOOD” to me may not be good to you. But one thing we can all agree on is that healthy hair is definitely not bad hair. And even with healthy hair sometimes, we can still have some bad hair days.

Today,  I have a list of some  bad things that I have done to my hair over the years. Well, before I started my healthy hair journey. The only thing on the list that I have not done to my hair is bleaching it. I am sure you will find at least one thing on the list that you are either currently doing to your hair or have done in the past. Change is good, but sometimes it is best if we just leave things the way they are. And sometimes too much of a good thing can also be a bad thing. Knowing when to go back to what worked before is the best way to continue the journey.

  1. Using too much  heat – Not all heat is bad for your hair. Using a hair steaming to help open the cuticle layers of the hair is a good way to allow proper penetration of your deep conditioner. But,  using styling tools like a hair straightener and a curly iron can damage the hair when done too often.
  2. Using products that cannot penetrate the hair shaft – Some oils do penetrate the hair and the scalp; while others don’t. Make sure you know which oils are good for nourishing the hair, and which ones are only good to seal the moisture in.
  3. Using too much shampoo – The only time I use shampoo is after I protect my ends with a conditioner. And I only use the shampoo to wash my scalp. Too much shampoo can cause dryness; and in most cases split ends.
  4. Not using shampoo at all – A clarifying shampoo should be used at least once a month to remove buildup from the scalp and hair.
  5. Using too much protein – Protein should be used when necessary. Protein is good for the hair, but using too much can make your hair feel like straw and cause breakage.
  6. Pulling the hair too tight when wearing braids, or ponytail – Traction alopecia is no joke. And the best way to avoid it is to switch positions when wearing ponytails. Tying your ponytails too tight at the same spot can cause major hair loss. Hair that will be difficult to grow back.
  7. Not trimming the split ends – Holding on to damaged ends can make the  split travel even further down the strand. The best thing to do is have regular trims to keep the ends strong.
  8. Bleaching your hair – Bleaching your hair at home should be a no-no. It should be done by a professional. Bleaching can damage the protein bonds within the hair. And depending on your hair’s porosity level, it can also break the hair, or make it look and feel thinner.
  9. Not washing your hair when wearing extensions – Not taking care of your own hair when wearing extensions can lead to dandruff, shedding, dryness, and even breakage.
  10. Getting a relaxer right after taking your extensions out – After removing any hair extensions, the hair should be washed and treated with a good protein treatment before applying any chemical treatments. A protein treatment can help fill the gap if there is any. This is very important because relaxers do break the protein bond within the hair during the process.
Did I leave anything out? What are some of the things you know are bad for your hair , but you do it anyway?

Ah bleaching. I let the Dominicans do it way back in the days when I was relaxed. No matter how much conditioning and moisturizing I did, all my hair broke off. lesson learned

I probably don't trim my ends enough. I probably only remember to do it about twice a year.

I love that definition of good hair babe. Very true. Great tips. Little wonder your hair is in top notch shape. A lot of people don't realize how bad the drying effect of shampoo is for their hair.
